For those who are experiencing problems with their speakers, doing a little computer handy-man project would not hurt a thing. Sometimes, the speakers are not the actual problem; it may also be the audio drive. This article shall provide tips and strategies on how one can fix those audio driver XP problems.

The Problem
Straightforwardly, what is the problem? There can be a lot of loose strings tangling over the audio drive that makes the audio performance of the computer poor. Let's try to see how tangled these things are. Check to see if any of these problems are present. If you see a check mark, then it can be that the audio drive is not working well.

• There are no audible sounds coming out of those speakers and headphones.
• The sound plays - but suddenly stops.
• The music player indicates that the song is running, but there's no sound!
• The sound skips some areas, and sometimes becomes incomprehensible.
• The sound is distorted.
• Computer stops responding, hangs, or restarts when the sound is played
• Error messages display after the sound is played. Error messages go like this:

"WAV sound playback error detected."
"MIDI output error detected."
"No wave device that can play files in the current format is installed."
"The CD Audio device is in use by another application."
"Your audio hardware cannot play files like the current file."

The Solution

There are four possible solutions to these said problems. It is advisable to try the first solution first before the next. Also, do make sure that the speakers or headphones are on and that the sound volume is set to an audible level.

Solution #1: Troubleshoot - using the Windows XP Sound Troubleshooter

Troubleshooting is the first option. To fix the problem automatically, just click the Fix It button and the Run Now after. A set of steps would be displayed in the FixIt wizard, just follow the steps and answer them honestly.

On the other hand, to fix the problem manually, the Windows XP Sound troubleshooter will present on-screen questions, follow the steps correctly and answer the questions honestly. The troubleshooter is going to find a solution to the problem.

Solution #2: Do an Update for the audio driver XP

It could be that an outdated audio driver is the one causing the problem. Use the Microsoft Update to help in identifying if the current audio driver is the latest version. Microsoft Update will also display available audio drivers for an update. Manufacturers usually update their drivers every month, so be sure to check for the latest. Also, if the audio driver is the problem, fix it by downloading a different driver. But be sure to choose the best and the most compatible one. To be safe, use a driver software database or a driver finder.

Solution #3: Check the Media Player

If one is using the Windows Media Player, it is possible that the problem is with this program and not with the audio driver. Make sure that the WMP is updated.

Solution #4: Attach another sound device

If the three steps above didn't work, try using a different device this time. Change into a different speaker or headphone that is definitely working.

On the other hand, if all else fails, then the last resort can either be: calling for customer support or calling the technician to come over and do some repairs. Either way, what is important is that the problem with the audio driver XP is cleared out.
